What is emotional balance through meditation?
Emotional balance through meditation is not about making yourself stop feeling sad, angry, afraid, or anxious. In the spirit of the Teacher Tạ Minh Tuấn (Saga), meditation is awareness. When awareness is clear enough, you are no longer entirely controlled by emotions.
Emotions are not enemies. They are information from the body and mind. What we need to learn is how to listen to, understand, and transform emotions rather than suppressing them or taking them out on others.

Why Do More Intelligent People Need Emotional Intelligence Even More?
Intellectually capable people can still suffer emotionally if they do not know how to work with themselves. In work, family, and leadership, intelligence without heart easily becomes cold, while emotion without awareness easily becomes a hasty reaction.
Meditation helps practitioners develop emotional awareness and self-understanding, allowing them to understand others better. Understanding makes love possible.
Three common mistakes in handling emotions
- Suppression: appearing fine while tension accumulates within.
- Identification: thinking “I am anger,” “I am sadness.”
- Venting indiscriminately: dump emotions on others and call it honesty.
A 7-minute emotional balance practice
- Sit quietly and relax your shoulders, face, and abdomen.
- Bring your attention to your natural breath for 1 minute.
- Name the clearest emotion: anger, sadness, worry, fear, emptiness.
- Feel where that emotion is in your body.
- Do not push away or overanalyze; simply notice.
- Breathe into the area of that sensation, then exhale and relax.
- Ask gently: “What does this part of me need?”
When Emotions Are Too Intense
If an emotion becomes too intense, open your eyes, feel your feet touching the ground, look around the room, and name 5 objects you see. This helps your nervous system return to the present before continuing deeper practice.
Do not push yourself deeper when body and mind do not yet feel safe enough. Emotional balance is an ability developed gradually.
