Forgiveness and healing do not mean forgetting everything

Forgiveness and healing is often misunderstood. Many people think forgiveness means saying the past does not matter, reconciling at any cost, or ignoring boundaries. That understanding can make the wounded person feel invalidated all over again.

In the spirit of mindful awareness, forgiveness does not mean erasing the truth. It is the process of laying down the burden of resentment so the mind is no longer imprisoned by the old story each day.

What Does Not Forgiving Hold Within You?

When an old story remains vivid in the mind, the body and nervous system can react as though the event is still happening. Each time you remember, you do not recall only in thought; you relive it through emotions, heartbeat, breath, facial muscles, and bodily tension.

Therefore, forgiveness is first of all giving yourself a chance to be freer. It does not oblige you to let the other person continue crossing your boundaries.

Forgiveness needs to go together with truth

Forgiveness cannot be forced through a piece of advice. If pain has not been seen, anger acknowledged, or boundaries established, words of forgiveness are merely an outer moral covering.

Healing begins with honesty: that hurt me. I was angry. I was disappointed. I wished to be loved differently.

4 practice steps

  1. Recognition: accurately name the emotions still stuck inside: anger, sadness, hurt, fear, resentment, shame.
  2. Allow: to let emotions be present in the body without rushing to suppress them.
  3. Look more broadly: see that the other person also has their own story, limitations, and ignorance, without justifying harmful behavior.
  4. Put down: choose not to continue carrying that story as your identity.

Forgiveness and boundaries

Forgiveness does not mean returning to a toxic relationship. A person can forgive inwardly while maintaining distance, saying no, and choosing a safer environment.

Boundaries are part of mature compassion. Without boundaries, forgiveness can easily become endurance.

When Forgiveness Becomes Healing

Forgiveness becomes healing when you no longer define yourself by what happened. The old story remains part of your history but no longer controls the present.
