Self-love is not complacency or selfishness—it is the first foundation for truly healing and living fully. And loving-kindness meditation is one of the shortest paths back to it.
Perhaps you have known someone — or been that person — sitting silently after a sharing session, then suddenly realizing they had forgotten their own existence. Not because of pain, but because for so long they had cared for everyone except themselves.
That story is not an exception. It is the story of many people.
Nếu điều bạn đang đọc cũng là điều bạn đang sống cùng, Inti Healing có một dịch vụ riêng cho chủ đề này: cân bằng thân tâm trí: đồng hành 1:1.
1. Self-Love Is Not Something You Are Allowed to Have — It Is Something You Need
Many people grow up with a quiet belief that: loving yourself is selfish. That a good person must put others first. That caring for yourself means neglecting someone else.
But this needs to be said plainly: a tree cannot provide shade when its roots have dried out. You cannot love others fully when you are empty and exhausted inside.
Loving yourself does not mean “I matter more than others.” It means “I matter too.”
That is not arrogance. It is truth.
2. What Happened to Your Relationship with Yourself?
Do you remember the last time you sat still — doing nothing, holding no phone, thinking neither about your children nor work — simply be with yourself or not?
For most people, the answer is: a very long time ago—so long they cannot even remember.
We are so busy that we forget we have an inner life. Unnamed emotions. Unacknowledged wounds. Parts left behind after ruptures — in love, marriage, family, and ourselves.
And then one day, the body and mind speak up. Not necessarily with a loud cry. Sometimes it is simply fatigue without a reason. Emptiness despite having everything. Tears falling without knowing why.
That is not weakness. It is a message: Dear one, come back to yourself.
3. What Is Compassion Meditation — And Why Can It Heal?
Compassion meditation—in Pali called metta — is the practice of sending love and compassion to yourself first, then extending them to others.
It sounds simple. But for many people, the first step — send love to yourself — is the hardest step.
In compassion meditation, when guided to place a hand on the chest and say, “I deserve happiness,” many people begin to cry. Not because the sentence is wrong, but because they have never believed it is true for them.
The deepest wounds are not what others inflict, but what we say to ourselves afterward.
Compassion meditation is not autosuggestion. It is a practice of recognition—seeing yourself as a real human being, with pain and joy, mistakes and good choices—and still choosing to stand by yourself. Just as you still love your child when they make a mistake.
4. After a Breakup: You Have Not Lost Yourself — You Just Need to Find Yourself Again
After a relationship breaks down or a marriage ends, a question often comes to mind: Who am I when I am no longer someone to that person?
This is a painful question. But also a doorway.
Perhaps you have experienced that feeling — no longer knowing what you like or who you are, after years of living for others and forgetting yourself. Then, at some moment, memories flood back: I used to enjoy drawing, reading, and walking alone.
The paintbrush is still there. It is only covered in dust.
Self-love after heartbreak begins there—not with a grand plan, but with remembering: who I once was, what I like, what I want.
5. Four Levels of Returning to Yourself
On the healing journey, we can recognize four layers of returning:
- Level 1 — Recognition: See where you are. Without judgment or correction — simply see. “I am tired. I am afraid. I am sad.”
- Layer 2—Acceptance: Embrace what is present, even when it is uncomfortable. “Yes, this is how I am right now. And that is okay.”
- Layer 3—Compassion: Place your own warm hand on that wound. Do not rush to heal—simply be present. “I am here with you.”
- Layer 4—Transformation: From within that state of being witnessed and held, something naturally begins to shift. No forcing is needed.
Healing is not erasing what happened. It is becoming more whole while carrying those scars.
6. Practice Now: 5 Minutes of Compassion Meditation for Yourself
This exercise requires no meditation cushion or experience. Just 5 minutes and a quiet place.
- Step 1 (1 minute): Sit or lie comfortably. Close your eyes. Inhale for a count of 4, hold for 2, exhale for 6. Repeat 3 times to begin settling the nervous system.
- Step 2 (1 minute): Place your right hand over the left side of your chest. Feel your heartbeat. It is proof: you are still alive, still here.
- Step 3 (2 minutes): In your mind, imagine yourself—this version sitting in meditation—as a small child. Look at that child through the eyes of the most loving person you have ever known. Then silently say three sentences: “You deserve happiness. You deserve love. You deserve peace.” Repeat, slowly.
- Step 4 (1 minute): Exhale gently. Let whatever feeling is present—warmth, sadness, emptiness, or anything else—simply be there. There is nothing else to do.
Once daily. No need for perfection. Just show up for yourself.

7. You Do Not Need to Be Perfect to Deserve Love
There is something I want to say directly to you, the person reading this:
You do not need to be thinner. More successful. To have overcome all your old pain. You do not need to become some “better” version before allowing yourself self-love.
Self-love is not a reward given when you are good enough. It is the starting point.
“Awakening is not becoming someone else — it is returning to yourself.”
A precious jewel does not need to prove its worth. It only needs to be recognized.
And you—wherever you are on this journey, whatever wound you carry—deserve to be seen, embraced, and loved. Starting with yourself.
If you want to go deeper into this journey, teacher Tạ Minh Tuấn shares more in the books — where I write about meditation, healing, and the journey back to your true self.
It is not easy. But it is possible.

Frequently asked questions
What Is Self-Love and Why Does It Matter?
Self-love is the ability to acknowledge, accept, and value yourself—regardless of what you have achieved or what others think of you. It is the foundation for loving others and living fully, not selfishness.
Can compassion meditation help people after a relationship breakdown?
Yes. Loving-kindness meditation helps you recognize and embrace difficult emotions after a breakup — without judging yourself or running away. It is a tool for reconnecting with yourself and beginning the process of healing from within.
I have never meditated. Can I begin compassion meditation?
Absolutely. Loving-kindness meditation does not require experience or special techniques. The 5-minute exercise in this article is a good starting point — you only need a quiet place and willingness to sit with yourself.
How can I love myself when I feel unworthy?
Feeling unworthy is often a shell formed over many years — not the truth. Begin not by immediately believing that, but through practice: sit with yourself, place a hand on your chest, and silently say compassionate words to yourself. Gradually, that feeling will shift.
How Does Self-Love Differ from Selfishness?
Selfishness is putting your interests first without regard for others. Self-love means caring for yourself so you can be fully present and give more genuinely—like putting on your own oxygen mask before helping the person beside you.
